Leukemoid Reaction--A Tale of 50 Years.

چکیده
Historical background and past knowledge: The term ‘leukemoid reaction’ was coined by Krumbhaar, in 1926, to describe the leukemia-like blood picture that was found in several non-leukemic conditions [3]. The diagnostic criteria included a total leukocyte count (TLC) of more than 50000/mm3 and/or the presence of immature leukocytes (mostly myelocytes or their equivalents) in the peripheral blood smear. These would usually be granulocytic or lymphoid, according to the predominant cell lineage. It was recognized that leukemoid reaction could be mistaken for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). However, in those days CML was differentiated from leukemoid reaction based on clinical manifestations (rareness in children, slow progression, pallor, bleeding, bone tenderness, lymphadenopathy and massive splenomegaly), hematological smear (mostly immature leukocytes and blasts with abnormal nuclei and cytoplasm with additional thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia and basophilia) and leukocyte alkaline phosphatase (LAP) levels (low or even absent in CML in contrast to increased in leukemoid reaction).

A 7 year-old male presented with recurrent fever, cough and respiratory distress for over last 2 years. Based on extremely high eosinophil count, high Immunoglobulin E, increase in eosinophilic precursors in bone marrow, and positive antigen test for Wuchereria bancrofti, a diagnosis of Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophilia with Eosinophilic Leukemoid Reaction was made. Complete recovery was achieved...
متن کاملLeukocyte Adhesion Deficiency Type 1 Presenting as Leukemoid Reaction
The hallmarks of leukocyte adhesion deficiency (LAD) are defects in the leukocyte adhesion process, marked leukocytosis and recurrent infections. These molecular and clinical manifestations result from an impaired step in the inflammatory process, namely, the emigration of leukocytes from the blood vessels to sites of infection, which requires adhesion of leukocytes to the endothelium. Over las...

A marked persistent leukocytosis (White blood cells, >50 000/lL) with bandemia, when the cause is other than leukemia, defines a leukemoid reaction. The major causes of leukemoid reactions include severe infections, intoxications and malignancies. A previous report showed that severe PG with extensive ulceration may have leukocytosis. T...

BACKGROUND To the Authors' knowledge, the literature regarding leukemoid reaction in patients with malignant bone tumor is sparse, and most of patients with leukemoid reaction have poor prognosis. AIM To study the leukemoid reaction in malignant bone tumor patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 105 consecutive malignant bone tumor patients with a white blood cell count > 50,000/microL w...

Neutrophilic leukocytosis above 50 × 10/l exclude leukemia, defines a leukemoid reaction (LR). It is associated with several diseases. Although it simulates leukemia, most of the causes are benign. Tumor-related LR is more common. It is associated with ranulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) secreted by the tumor cells. A 38-year-old woman, presented with advanced breast cancer and leukocy...
